Miken Ultra Ssusa Slow Pitch Softball Bat

This quality made in the USA bat from Miken will give any senior softball player an edge over the competition. It is a two-piece composite bat that really wallops the ball when you connect just right with it. It is only sanctioned for use in senior softball league play.

This bat claims to use advanced technology in its construction and we believe it. You can really hit a ball with some excellent pop for sure with it. It’s a really good bat.

  • What we like about it
If you are a hitter that likes a lot of flex in your bat then this bat is one you will like a lot. It has some good flex which gives it a super sweet spot. This is the type of bat the guys who like to hit the ball hard for average will rave about.
  • Potential drawbacks
There were a couple of concerns we had with this bat. Even though we tested it extensively, it was still showing some signs of wear. That and a couple of other things we noticed sent up a red flag and there could be some durability issues with this bat.

Dudley Slow Pitch Softball Bat

This is a nice versatile bat from Dudley that should enhance any player’s abilities when hitting a softball. It has a bigger than average sweet spot and an improved grip technology that help set the potential of this bat apart from the rest.

The sweet spot on this bat helps generate some extra power to because it is so end-loaded. You not only can hit the ball hard but you can drive it a long way too. Dudley has long been known for making incredible softballs and now they can boast they make incredible bats too.

  • What we like about it
The grip technology on this bat is really extraordinary. When we tried it the grip seemed to have less resistance than normal grips and even sort of felt like it was helping rotate your hand during the swing. Not to mention the grip itself was ultra-comfortable when holding the bat and very slip resistant too.
  • Potential drawbacks
We mentioned the fact that this bat was end loaded and that can sometimes cause some break in issues. That is definitely the case with this bat from Dudley. You can expect an extended break-in period with it for sure.

2015 Dudley Lightning Senior Softball Bats

This is yet another great design from Dudley that a lot of thought and effort went into the production of. It is very similar to the previous model we just reviewed except for the fact it is not end loaded. This is a balanced bat that is more suited for those batters that like to hit to all fields without power. Not that you can’t hit the occasional long ball with it.

It has the same advanced grip technology that Dudley is famous for and also has the superior composite construction that gives this bat a big sweet spot for hitting a softball.

  • What we like about it
As we mentioned that bat is made to be balanced. When we tested it we had a lot of bat control so we could cover all areas of the strike zone without getting all twisted up like you would with an end-loaded bat. It really gave us a nice feel at the plate.
  • Potential drawbacks
It seems like the Dudley bats had an extremely long break in period. This one is no exception. That is kind of rare for a bat that is not designed to be end-loaded.

Miken is known for making great bats and this is one of them. It really packs a lot of punch when hitting the ball. It is an end-loaded monster that you can drive the ball very deep with on a regular basis. Who says that just because you are a senior softball player you can’t hit home runs anymore?

It is a bat that is well balanced and also has a very comfortable grip. It is a USA made product by a very reputable company when it comes to manufacturing superior softball equipment.

  • What we like about it
We really liked the solid construction of this bat. Miken has a done a great job with the composites in it to make the bat strong but still keep it light and balanced when swinging it. Hats off to this company for making a bat like this.
  • Potential drawbacks
We do have one pretty big concern here. Although it’s true this bat is well constructed and is brought to you at an affordable price, we still are not very happy that there is no warranty with this bat from the manufacturer.

Louisville Slugger SBHZ16S Slow Pitch Senior Softball Baseball Bat

New-LOUISVILLE SLUGGER SBHZ16S SLOW PITCH SENIOR SOFTBALL BASEBALL BATLouisville Slugger is a big name when it comes to baseball and softball bats and this is another fine bat product of theirs. It is a bat that will not break your budget but will still help improve your game when batting.

It is a three piece composite bat which is pretty amazing considering its reasonable price. The bat also has a better than average sweet spot and is end loaded so you can drive a softball deep on a regular basis.

  • What we like about it
For one, you can’t beat the inexpensive price of this bat. With that being said this bat is still a nice end loaded model. Even the weakest of us who tested it was hitting the softball a long way.
  • Potential drawbacks
There are three things that concern many of us with this bat. One is the fact that it will take you a while before breaking it in to use in a game. The other is that there may be some durability issues with this model. It also is a bat that does not come with any sort of warranty from the manufacturer.

2015 Combat Centenarian Senior Softball Bat

This may be the most advanced senior bat on our review list because of the technology that goes into it. It is a bat that has more different fibers than is typical in a composite bat. The result is a bat that is sting-free even when you mishit it in cold weather and a bat that sends a softball flying even if it is not perfectly struck.

It is also a senior softball bat that is very durable, to say the least. You can expect this bat to be used for more than just one season which is exceptional.

  • What we like about it
This is a balanced bat by design and it really feels that way when swinging it. If you are a senior hitter that prefers bat control over power then this bat would be a really good choice for you. We can see anyone that uses it hitting for a high average.
  • Potential drawbacks
This is another surprising bat that has an extended break in period even though it is not end loaded. We mentioned before that bats that are balanced tend to be easier to break in so you can use them in a game.

HOW TO HIT A SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL FURTHER

The transition that people go through from playing baseball to softball is a lot more difficult than people think; this is even true when it comes to slowpitch softball. Batters naturally think they can transfer their hitting skills easily from one sport to the other. Once they start playing softball reality sets in and many players have a difficult time adjusting and hitting consistently.

This is especially true for long ball hitters and they often end up very frustrated. Well, there are some adjustments every batter needs to make at the plate in slowpitch softball to help them hit the ball further and much of that comes down to positioning in the batter’s box and simple physics.

3 Tips on Slow Pitched Softball Hitting

Here are the keys to hitting a slow pitched softball further on a consistent basis:

  1. Stand back in the batter’s box
In slow pitch softball, the pitched ball comes to you in what can best be described as a large arc. A pitched ball can be very hard to hit if you don’t time on that arc where to swing. That is why it is a good idea to stand back in the batter’s box so you are slightly behind home plate. In order for a pitcher to throw a strike, the pitched softball will get to a point where it will flatten out in its trajectory in front of you instead of even with you. That will help you hit the ball further on a consistent basis.
  2. Use a slight uppercut
Level swings work great in baseball but they will not help you generate much power on slowpitch softball. You will hit the ball the furthest with a very slight uppercut. This upward swing tends to help the ball gain distance because the batted ball starts going up immediately and then will stay in the air longer. This makes the ball travel much further in the air than a line drive ball hit with a level swing.
  3. Use an end-loaded bat
How does an end-loaded bat help you? It’s very simple. An end loaded bat transfers the weight of the bat to the end of it which is the sweet spot for hitting. This increased weight on the sweet spot will help you drive a ball much further than you can with a balanced weight bat that does not have this signature weight transfer when swinging it.

Practice these steps in the batting cage and you will quickly start hitting the ball further than you ever have before on a consistent basis.

SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL FIELDING TIPS

You can be the best softball hitter in the world but it won’t make you a complete player. There are two important parts of the game and that is hitting and fielding. The only way to be a complete ballplayer is to be good at them both. Just like hitting, fielding a softball takes a tremendous amount of hand-eye coordination to get it right. Besides having natural hand-eye coordination there are other things you can do to help the fielding side of your softball game too.

  1. Get a big glove
Many people make the mistake of bringing the same glove they used in baseball games to use in softball games when they make the transition to the new sport. This is a big mistake and the reason why is because a softball and baseball are dramatically different in size with a baseball being much smaller. That means that the baseball glove is already wear broken in a way that it will not be easy to squeeze the larger sized softball. So buy a new glove that is larger than what you would have used to play baseball to accommodate catching bigger softballs.
  2. Work on positioning
Positioning in softball is a key part of fielding too. It is another aspect of the game that is much different than baseball. For example; a third baseman in baseball stands even with the bag or cheats in a little in front of it to guard against an opponent bunting. There is no such thing as bunting in slow pitch softball so a third baseman should play several steps behind the third base bag to give themselves more time to react to a hard hit softball. So if you are new to slowpitch softball, ask a veteran teammate where to properly position yourself when fielding.
  3. Don’t forget about perfecting your throwing too
Many slowpitch softball players will work for hours catching fly balls and grounders but they neglect to work on their throwing the softball too. It does not matter how well you catch a softball if you can’t throw it well after catching it. So reserve some time to practice throwing with a partner too.

So be a complete ballplayer and work on your fielding too. If you both hit and field well you will be a complete ballplayer and an asset to any slowpitch softball team you play on.

SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL VS A BASEBALL

We have already briefly discussed that it is not as easy a transition as people think going from hitting a baseball to a softball. For some people, it can be extremely difficult and frustrate them. Why can it be so tough on hitters that go from hitting a fast-pitched baseball to hitting a very slow pitched softball?

Differences Between Hitting a Baseball and Hitting in Slowpitch Softball

  1. Ball arc
The most difficult part of going from hitting a fast-pitched baseball to hitting a slowpitch softball is getting used to the ball coming to you in an arc. A baseball moves a little as it is pitched but all those different pitches come at you with an almost straight trajectory. It is quite the opposite with a slow pitched softball because the ball is lofted up into the air higher when pitched so it comes to the batter in an often difficult to judge arc. It takes a little getting used to for sure.
  2. Ball speed
Pitched ball speed has a lot to do with making the adjustment from baseball to slowpitch softball too. Baseballs are thrown at much higher speeds than a softball is and get to the batter very quickly. A slow pitched softball can seem like it takes forever to get to the batter at times. Baseball hitters find it difficult to be patient when first batting in slowpitch softball and tend to over swing and mishit the ball. So being relaxed and patient is a key attribute when hitting a slow-pitched softball.
  3. Distance pitched
Another big factor in adjusting from baseball to slow pitch softball is the distance from the pitcher’s mound that a batter stands. A baseball mound is 60 feet and 6 inches from home plate as opposed to a slowpitch softball mound being only 50 feet from home plate. That 10-foot difference in feet may not seem like much but it can make it difficult to time a pitch when starting to first play slowpitch softball.

These are simple things, right? Yes, it’s true but they impact someone making the transition from hitting a baseball to hitting a softball on a regular basis. So despite the fact, a ball is thrown much slower in slowpitch softball than in baseball it still can be very difficult to get used to hitting the ball at first.
